A promising trajectory
Will Plunkett, a standout baseball player from Mamaroneck, New York, has emerged as one of the most talked‑about prospects heading into the 2026 MLB Draft. From a young age his skill set set him apart, catching the eye of his high school coach.
Mike Chiapparelli, who has led Plunkett for several seasons, recognized the teenager’s raw talent early and nurtured his development into a five‑year starter for the Mamaroneck High School team.
The coach’s confidence translated into a full athletic scholarship to Binghamton University, where Plunkett continued to refine his game while maintaining a strong academic record.
In February, Plunkett traveled to Chase Field in Phoenix to take part in the MLB Draft Combine. The event, which gathers the nation’s top draft‑eligible players, gave scouts a firsthand look at his abilities.
Ranked No. 196 on MLB’s Top 200 Draft Prospects list, Plunkett posted a .485 batting average with six home runs and 23 stolen bases during his senior season, numbers that helped cement his status as a high‑school All‑American.
He became the only player from New York selected to that elite group, a distinction that highlighted the significance of his achievements on a national stage.
Beyond raw statistics, scouts praised Plunkett for his baseball IQ, work ethic, and character. Former player and analyst Harold Reynolds noted that the youngster’s demeanor on and off the field left a strong impression during the Combine.
Jerry Defabbia, a key figure in player development, also played a role in shaping Plunkett’s preparation, offering mentorship that blended technical instruction with mental resilience.
The response from professional clubs has been overwhelming; all 30 MLB teams have expressed interest, signaling that the infielder could be a valuable addition regardless of the draft slot he eventually receives.
Looking ahead
As the draft approaches, Plunkett says he is focused on staying grounded and enjoying the process. “I just want to keep playing the game I love,” he remarked, emphasizing a simple approach as he prepares for the next chapter of his baseball journey.
