Williston's Historic Championship Run
The Williston girls basketball team captured its first state title in program history on Friday night, defeating Jay 66-49 at the University of North Florida's arena. The victory capped a 21-2 season that saw the team surge through the brackets with a blend of grit and precision.
Earlier in the tournament, the Lady Red Knights had dispatched defending champions Wildwood 61-52 and edged Blountstown 43-41 in tightly contested semifinals, showcasing resilience against some of the state's toughest opponents.
Coach Willie Powers II's Leadership
Head coach Willie Powers II, who was recently honored as the Florida Dairy Farmers Rural Coach of the Year, credited the team's preparation and unity for the breakthrough. "We knew we had to play our game, stay focused, and trust each other," he said in an interview.
The coaching staff emphasized disciplined practice, mental readiness, and a relentless work ethic, qualities that translated into crisp execution on the court when it mattered most.
Voices from the Locker Room
Senior guard Ashlyn Young described the championship as a "positive change" for the program, adding, "Our goal is to be state champions, and we finally made it happen." Meanwhile, teammate Kierce Solomon highlighted the energy that fueled their win over Wildwood, noting the team entered the game "fully prepared and buzzing with confidence."
Taylor Powers, another key contributor, spoke about the importance of maintaining good energy and preparation to perform at a high level, a mantra that defined their championship run.
Sports director Mike Ridaught of Mainstreet Daily News, who also founded The Prep Zone, praised the team's journey, stating, "Their story is a testament to what can happen when talent meets tenacity."
Looking ahead, the Lady Red Knights enter the offseason with high expectations, but Coach Powers remains grounded, focusing on continued growth and community support as they aim to defend their title next year.
