Eagles Prepare for Crucial Encounter with Queens
The Winthrop University women's soccer team will host Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday, August 27, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, continuing a series that has stretched across three consecutive seasons.
Queens arrive after a 3‑0 loss to Richmond on Sunday, leaving them winless and carrying a 1‑0‑1 edge in the all‑time series, the most recent meeting having ended in a 0‑0 draw.
Senior forward Amalie Steen scored the only goal for Winthrop, converting one of three shots on target, while midfielder Monssi Avila‑Gutierrez led the attack with six attempts, three of which were on goal.
The Eagles enter the match fresh off a 1‑1 draw with Emory & Henry, a result that kept their all‑time record at 158 wins, 200 losses and 53 draws and positioned them sixth in the 2026 Big South preseason poll.
Coach Monssi Avila‑Gutierrez, a First Team All‑Big South selection last season, will rely on his experience and the energy of eight freshmen and a transfer student as the team looks to break the deadlock.
