Winthrop University’s women’s soccer team will host Emory & Henry on August 23 at 6:00 p.m. EST on the campus fields in Rock Hill, South Carolina, marking the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Both squads enter the contest after narrow defeats, with the Eagles seeking to rebound from a 1-0 loss to VMI and the Wasps looking to bounce back from a 5-0 setback against Gardner-Webb.
A Milestone for the Program
The matchup represents a milestone for Winthrop, which is aiming to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this season and to add a 70th home win to its historic record.
Coach Lindsay Sheets, in her second year at the helm, has blended eight freshmen with a transfer student, creating a dynamic mix that includes senior standouts Monssi Avila-Gutierrez, who earned First Team All-Big South honors last season, and Cordelia McIntosh, a midfield presence named to the Big South Midseason Watch List.
Freshman forward Mia Silber scored the game-winning goal in the recent shutout of VMI, while goalkeeper Mia Ruffalo recorded her first career clean sheet, underscoring the team’s defensive depth.
The Eagles are currently ranked sixth in the Big South Preseason Poll and will travel to Charlotte on August 27 to face Queen’s before returning to Rock Hill for the Emory & Henry showdown.
With a program record of 158-200-52 and 24 seasons of play, Winthrop looks to leverage its experience and the energy of its young roster to turn the early season schedule into a springboard for a deeper run in conference play.
