The University of Wisconsin–Madison has unveiled three new members to its men’s hockey coaching staff, bringing a blend of collegiate legacy and professional experience to the program alongside head coach Mike Hastings and associate coach Todd Knott.
Andy Brandt Returns to the Badgers
Andy Brandt, who previously served as an assistant under Hastings and later led the USHL’s Madison Capitals, rejoins Wisconsin after a stint as head coach of the Madison Capitals and an assistant role with the Badgers during the 2022‑23 season.
Steve Briere, a ten‑year NHL goaltending veteran, arrives with a résumé that includes three seasons as a coach for the Seattle Kraken and prior stints behind the benches at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Omaha of the USHL, and Topeka in the NAHL.
Pavelski Takes the Helm of Player Development
Joe Pavelski, a two‑time Olympian and member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, will oversee player development after an 18‑year NHL career that featured a championship on Wisconsin’s 2006 NCAA title team and a leading‑scorer role for the Badgers.
The new appointments join head coach Mike Hastings, associate head coach Todd Knott and assistant Nick Peruzzi, forming a staff that blends fresh NHL insight with deep ties to the university’s championship tradition.
Championship Legacy Meets Future Vision
Pavelski’s roots in Madison date back to his collegiate days, when he helped the Badgers capture the 2006 NCAA crown and earned All‑American honors. His extensive NHL experience and Hall of Fame status are expected to elevate the program’s recruiting and player growth strategies.
University officials expressed confidence that the trio’s combined expertise will reinforce Wisconsin’s competitive edge as the team looks ahead to the upcoming season, while also honoring the program’s rich history.
