Board approval marks first step
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s board of control has given the green light to a proposal that would introduce a 35‑second shot clock for high school basketball across the state. The measure passed with a 10‑1 vote, signaling strong support among the board members who oversee the association’s rules.
If the full membership endorses the change at its scheduled meeting in April 2027, the new timing will take effect for the 2028‑2029 season. Until that approval, teams may experiment with the clock during non‑conference contests this year, provided both schools agree to its use.
Season timeline and conditions
The board’s decision sets a clear path: the 35‑second clock would begin in the 2028‑2029 season, contingent on a final vote by the WIAA’s full membership next spring. In the meantime, the clock can be used in selected non‑conference games this year if both teams agree.
The change reflects a broader push to modernize the high school game and align it with the faster pace seen in college and professional basketball. Coaches will need to adjust offensive strategies, emphasizing quicker ball movement and shot selection as teams transition to the new timing.
