A Strategic Boost for the Hilltoppers
Western Kentucky University’s football program has announced the addition of two promising athletes ahead of the new season, a move designed to reinforce both special teams and defensive depth.
Michael Smith, a transfer kicker who previously showcased his leg strength at Florida A&M, arrives with a proven track record of long kickoffs and reliable field goals. During his tenure with the Rattlers he sent 88 kickoffs for 5,310 yards, averaging 60.3 yards per kick, and recorded 37 touchbacks. In the 2023 campaign he maintained a 59.8‑yard average and even nailed a 49‑yard field goal against a top‑ranked Miami squad.
Joining him in the secondary is Alan Gbee, a junior‑college defensive back who transferred from Moorpark College after stints at Coffeyville Community College and Misericordia University. At Moorpark he logged 25 tackles and an interception across ten games, and his experience at the junior‑college level adds a physical presence to the Hilltoppers’ defensive lineup.
Coach staff emphasized that the new signings address key areas of concern, particularly the need for a more consistent kickoff unit and added depth in the secondary. By integrating players who have already faced high‑level competition, the coaching staff believes the team can translate that experience into immediate on‑field impact.
As the Hilltoppers prepare for the upcoming schedule, the blend of veteran transfer talent and fresh junior‑college prospects promises to add a new dimension to the roster. The coaching staff is optimistic that these acquisitions will help the program build momentum as it looks to contend in a competitive conference.
