On a warm afternoon in early June, a silver SUV parked at Community Park in Solon, Ohio, became an unintended prison for two dogs. The vehicle’s rear hatch was left ajar, and despite a bowl of water inside, the animals panted heavily and breathed rapidly as the temperature climbed to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Police officers arrived at approximately 2:09 p.m. after receiving a call about the distressed pets. Using the lights on their patrol car and a public address system, they attempted to locate the owner but were unable to do so immediately.
The dogs, both crated inside the SUV, were eventually removed by officers and taken to the Solon Police Department’s kennel for safekeeping while the situation was sorted out.

Valerie Haywood, the driver of the SUV, was identified as the responsible party. She was cited for cruelty to animals, a second‑degree misdemeanor, and released pending a court appearance. Investigators noted that Haywood had been attending a nearby baseball game at the time of the incident.
