A wave of new varsity programs is reshaping women's flag football across the United States, as institutions from the Northern Plains to the Northeast announce ambitious rollouts for the upcoming academic years.
Dawson Community College in Montana will field its first varsity team in the 2026‑27 season, marking the first time an NJCAA member in the state has elevated the sport to varsity status.
Further east, Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts is set to upgrade its club program to varsity competition in 2027‑28, having secured a grant from the NJCAA Foundation together with partners NFL FLAG and RCX Sports.
A new varsity frontier for women's flag football
At St. Lawrence University in New York, the 2027‑28 year will see the addition of varsity women's flag football alongside a new varsity triathlon, reflecting a broader push to diversify women's athletics.
The National Junior College Athletic Association has slated women's flag football as a championship sport beginning in 2027‑28, while the NCAA is poised to vote in January 2027 on a proposal for a National Collegiate Flag Football Championship.
Collectively, 14 institutions spanning states such as Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois are slated to field new teams for the 2026‑27 cycle, underscoring a nationwide expansion.
