Women’s Flag Football Set for NCAA Championship by 2028 Ahead of Olympic Debut

A landmark decision by the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact paves the way for a national championship and broader growth of the sport.

A Milestone for Women's Sports

The NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact has taken a decisive step toward granting women's flag football a national championship, with the prospect of a full championship debut as early as 2028, just months before the sport makes its Olympic debut in Los Angeles.

More than 100 colleges have signaled their intent to field teams in the upcoming academic year, positioning the emerging sport to follow a pathway similar to other women's athletics that have secured NCAA championship status through the Emerging Sports for Women program.

"This is a landmark moment for collegiate athletics," said Marion Terenzio, chair of the Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact Emerging Sport Subcommittee, underscoring the significance of the recommendation.

The proposal now moves to each NCAA division, which must develop and submit a formal championship proposal by July 1, after which a dedicated committee will be formed to oversee the sport's administration.

The International Olympic Committee's inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Games has amplified momentum, prompting the NCAA to align its collegiate framework with the Olympic schedule.

Beyond the college level, the sport enjoys broad support: over 20 states have already sanctioned flag football as a varsity girls' high school sport, and participation among girls aged 6 to 12 has surged 283 percent since 2015.

RCX Sports founder and CEO Izell Reese noted the passion driving the movement, while Jacqie McWilliams Parker, a longtime advocate for female athletes, emphasized that expanded access translates into greater success and participation.

USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck highlighted the potential for a fully recognized NCAA championship to cement the sport's growth, calling it a "transformative opportunity" for women's sports.
