The Women’s Pro Baseball League is set to open its inaugural season on August 1, marking the first professional women’s baseball competition in the United States since the 1950s.
A League Reborn
Four teams – the Boston Hunters, Los Angeles Queens, New York Heights and San Francisco Firebells – will converge at a single venue in Springfield, Illinois, for the opening campaign.
The Hunters take their name from Harriet Hunt, a 19th‑century advocate for women’s health and rights, and feature Beth Greenwood, a catcher who grew up in Amherst, New Hampshire, dreaming of a Red Sox uniform and recently threw the first pitch at Fenway Park.
Maggie Fox, also from New Hampshire, suits up for the Los Angeles Queens, while Jackie Reynolds, a native of Woburn, Massachusetts, represents the New York Heights.
Looking Ahead
League organizers say the debut season is a stepping stone, with plans to cultivate fan bases in existing markets and eventually expand to additional cities across the country.
For Greenwood, the journey from a childhood backyard game to the mound at Fenway encapsulates the league’s broader mission: to give aspiring female athletes a stage where talent, not gender, defines the narrative.
