A Tough End to the Season
The Worthington Post 5 18U baseball squad saw its Minnesota American Legion Baseball Sub‑State 2 campaign conclude with a 5‑9 overall record, falling first to top‑seeded New Ulm and then to New Prague in elimination play.
The opening game began with a promising 3‑0 advantage in the first inning, sparked by a one‑out single from Ethan Anderson that scored Austin Gruis. Kaden Khamphanh added a RBI single in the second, but New Ulm answered with a five‑run burst in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by 2‑RBI hits from Dirk Haynes and Levi Hopp. Worthington managed nine hits overall, with Anderson, Brayden Raymo, Khamphanh and Christian Dailey each contributing multiple knocks, yet the early lead slipped away.
A second matchup pitted the team against New Prague, where Worthington struck first with a double from Wyatt Petersen in the bottom of the first. The lead evaporated as New Prague erupted for 20 runs, fueled by four hits, four walks and an RBI sacrifice fly. Bodie Vosejpka led the opposition with three hits and two RBIs, while Worthington could only muster three scattered hits, including singles from Petersen, Khamphanh and Logan Kerkaert.
Despite the setbacks, individual performances highlighted the season’s bright spots.
