The 2026 WPIAL soccer season is set to begin with a series of notable rule changes that will shape play across the state.
For the first time, regular‑season matches will not feature overtime; ties will be recorded after regulation, placing greater emphasis on performance within the standard 80 minutes.
Championship venue makes a historic move
The PIAA championships will be held at F.N.B. Stadium in Pittsburgh for the first time, with the finals scheduled for November 20‑21, bringing the state’s top teams to a new venue.
Coaches and players alike are adjusting to the new format, knowing that every point earned in regulation will directly influence playoff seeding.
Teams poised to dominate
Peters Township enters the campaign as a top contender, bolstered by the return of forward Marina Hajnosz, an all‑state selection who adds depth to an already potent attack.
Fox Chapel, moving up to Class 4A, will field star Emily McKee, a Pitt commit and TribLive player of the year, who is expected to drive the team’s offense.
North Allegheny and Seneca Valley, the defending Class 4A champions and runners‑up respectively, bring experience and depth, while Norwin, Upper St. Clair and North Allegheny also boast returning goal‑scoring threats.

Among the standout returnees are Sydney Postler of Seneca Valley, Anelisa Castrodale of Upper St. Clair, and the aforementioned McKee, each bringing a blend of skill and leadership.

Class rankings and division outlook
Class 4A rankings place Peters Township at No. 1, followed by Seneca Valley, Fox Chapel, North Allegheny and Norwin, while Class 3A sees Fox Chapel, South Fayette, Radnor, Plum and Hampton at the top. In Class 2A, Burrell, Quaker Valley, South Park, Freeport and Mt. Pleasant lead, and Class A is headed by Bentworth, Sewickley Academy, Springdale, Winchester Thurston and Riverview.
The season’s calendar kicks off with first practice on August 17, opening day games on August 28, and WPIAL playoffs beginning November 5‑7, culminating in the championship weekend in mid‑November.
