Wrexham AFC’s women’s side is set to make its inaugural appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, opening its campaign at home against Armenian champions FC Pyunik.
The milestone comes five years after Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their purchase of the club, a move that has reshaped its profile and ambitions.
Building a Competitive Squad
Director of women’s football Mark Swales and manager Jenny Sugarman have overseen the recruitment and preparation of a squad that finished the Adran Premier season as champions, earning a place in Europe’s elite club competition.
Sugarman, who now has direct access to Reynolds and McElhenney for logistical and financial support, recalls her first task as assembling a team capable of competing at the highest domestic level.
A Strategic Leap
Chief executive Michael Williamson and minority owners Eric and Kaleen Allyn have worked closely with the Football Association of Wales, whose upcoming strategy for women’s football is expected to be announced in September.
Gemma Owen, formerly head of women’s football operations, laid the groundwork that allowed the current generation to thrive, while Sugarman stresses that the team is not merely participating for the experience but to compete seriously.
Wrexham will enter the Champions League qualifying round as the lowest‑ranked side, a challenge that both owners and staff view as an opportunity to showcase the club’s growth and to inspire greater investment in the women’s game.
