Winston‑Salem State University is charting an ambitious goal: fill its 17,000‑seat Bowman Gray Stadium with 10,000 fans for each home football game in 2026. The plan hinges on a shift to night kick‑offs at 8 p.m., a move designed to broaden appeal among alumni, families and regional supporters.
Night Games Aim to Light Up Attendance
By moving three of the five scheduled home contests to evening slots, the Rams hope to accommodate supporters from Charlotte and other nearby cities who juggle Saturday commitments such as Pop Warner leagues. The timing also reduces travel constraints that previously limited turnout.
The 2025 season ended with a 4‑6 record, but the program is already seeing momentum. Season ticket sales are outpacing last year, with general admission packages priced at $130 and individual tickets starting at $30. Early buyers are being encouraged to donate unused seats to maximize crowd size and revenue.
Schedule Highlights and Capacity Realities
The Rams will open the season against Mars Hill on September 5 and host Johnson C. Smith on September 12 before a slate of afternoon games that includes a Homecoming matchup on November 7. Bowman Gray’s capacity of 17,000 means a 10,000‑fan crowd would occupy roughly 60 percent of the venue, a target that aligns with the university’s broader attendance strategy.
University officials note that the night‑game experiment is part of a larger effort to re‑engage the community, boost sponsorships and create a vibrant game‑day atmosphere that can sustain interest throughout the season.
