WSU Women’s Soccer Secures First Win Under New Coach

A 4-1 victory over South Florida marks a turning point for the team as they look ahead to a matchup in South Dakota

A Fresh Start in Pullman

The Washington State University women’s soccer squad finally broke through the early-season slump, earning its first victory under head coach Chris Citowicki with a 4-1 win over South Florida.

Lexi Lee opened the scoring in the 13th minute, converting a penalty kick that set the tone for a dominant second half.

South Florida answered back with a penalty of their own in the 62nd minute, but the Cougars responded swiftly, piling up three goals within ten minutes. Delaney Hawkins struck in the 67th, followed by Meg Devall in the 72nd, and Makena Smith capped the burst in the 77th.

Emma Widmor’s vision shone through two assists, while goalkeeper Sidney Venier made five crucial saves to preserve the lead.

A Coach’s Second Chapter

Citowicki took the reins after eight years and nine Big Sky titles at Montana, succeeding Todd Shulenberger who had led the program since December. The win marks a promising start to his tenure in Pullman.

Looking Ahead

The Cougars will travel to Brookings, South Dakota, to face South Dakota State on Thursday at 5 p.m., aiming to build momentum as they continue their campaign.
