The University of Wyoming’s football program is entering a pivotal phase, having attracted nearly 50 new faces to the roster during the offseason. The influx reflects a strategic effort to replenish positions that were left vacant after a series of departures.
Among the newcomers is Jayden Williams, a Las Vegas native who arrived on campus early and has already taken part in spring drills. A freshman wide receiver, Williams brings a high‑school pedigree that includes 1,620 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns, numbers that have generated optimism among the coaching staff.
Head coach Jay Sawvel, now in his third year, released a list of ten players he has earmarked as “keepers” – a group that includes running back Samuel “Tote” Harris, defensive tackle Dante Drake and Williams himself. The list also retains veterans such as Jake Wilson, Deion DeBlanc, Desman Hearns, Rex Johnsen and Braylon Jenkins, signaling continuity at key spots.
The team will also see a new face under center, with William & Mary graduate transfer Tyler Hughes slated to compete for the quarterback role. Complementing the backfield, the Cowboys have added 1,000‑yard rusher Markell Holman and interior linemen Chandler Donaway, Jason Maciejcak and Jeremiah Katt, bolstering depth on the offensive line.
While the roster gains promise, it also bears the loss of several key contributors, including top receiver Chris Durr Jr., who transferred to Maryland, and cornerbacks Tyrese Boss and Markie Grant, who entered the transfer portal. Despite these departures, the coaching staff remains confident that the blend of experienced returnees and fresh talent will keep the program moving forward.
Spring Practice Outlook
Spring practice has already offered a glimpse of the chemistry forming among the new pieces. Williams’ early enrollment allowed him to participate in drills alongside the returning starters, and his performance has been noted by both coaches and teammates as a potential catalyst for the offense.
