The Wyoming Cowboys are entering the upcoming season with a significantly refreshed roster, having added nearly 50 players during the offseason while also holding onto core contributors such as Samuel "Tote" Harris, Dante Drake and Jayden Williams. The returning core provides continuity on offense, but the team also faces losses among its top receivers and secondary.
Defensive Overhaul
To shore up a defense that lost impact cornerbacks Tyrese Boss and Markie Grant, the Cowboys brought in safety Travis Franklin Jr. from Jacksonville State. Franklin arrives with 51 career tackles, including 25 from the previous season, and has already logged three pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception. Alongside him, veterans like Rex Johnsen and Braylon Jenkins are expected to provide depth, while newcomers Mason Drube and Markell Holman add versatility.
At the quarterback position, the Cowboys welcome Tyler Hughes, a transfer from William & Mary, who is expected to bring a fresh arm to the offense and help stabilize the backfield. The offensive line also sees the addition of Chandler Donaway and Jason Maciejcak, both of whom bring experience from previous programs.
Coaching Praise
Head coach Jay Sawvel has publicly highlighted Franklin’s work ethic, noting his progression from a modest tackle count last season to a player poised to make a larger impact on both defense and special teams. Sawvel also praised the contributions of players such as Jeremiah Katt and Desman Hearns, who are competing for increased roles in the secondary.
The coaching staff’s emphasis on depth extends to the special teams unit, where the speed of Deion DeBlanc and the tackling ability of Markie Grant could prove decisive in close games. With a blend of retained veterans and new faces, the Cowboys hope to translate this roster movement into on‑field success, aiming to improve upon last year’s defensive metrics and to compete strongly within the Mountain West.
