Knowles, who previously coordinated the Nittany Lions' defense, was recruited by Tennessee’s staff to inject continuity and a proven philosophy into a unit that is still finding its identity after a wave of departures.
Gilliam’s family tree reads like a football story: his father, Cecil Gilliam, played at Morgan State in the late 1990s, while his cousin, Kelvin Gilliam Jr., earned a reputation as a defensive lineman at Oklahoma before moving on to the professional ranks.
Before focusing on football, Gilliam excelled in basketball and baseball, but it was on the gridiron that he began to attract attention, eventually earning a four‑star rating from ESPN and committing to Penn State in June 2023.
