Yankees Edge Out Mets in New York City Fan Preferences, Survey Shows

Marist Poll reveals shifting baseball loyalties across boroughs ahead of weekend interleague matchup

A City Divided by Pinstripes

The upcoming weekend will see the New York Yankees and the New York Mets meet in interleague play, a rare clash that has sparked fresh debate among the city’s baseball fans.

According to the latest Marist Poll, almost 40 percent of New York City residents say they are more inclined to root for the Yankees, while a comparable share express a preference for the Mets.

Among those who actually follow baseball, the split is even more pronounced, with nearly six out of ten indicating a stronger allegiance to the Yankees.

The poll also found that 64 percent of city dwellers anticipate a better season for the Yankees compared to just 32 percent who hold the same expectation for the Mets.

Geographic nuances emerge when the data is broken down by borough. In Queens, the Mets enjoy a modest plurality, making it the only borough where the team leads in fan preference.

The Bronx and Manhattan show the strongest Yankee leanings, with nearly half of residents in each borough saying they would cheer for the Bronx Bombers.

Brooklyn also tilts toward the Yankees, though a notable 42 percent of Brooklynites admit they do not follow baseball at all, underscoring the diverse sports interests of the borough.

These findings highlight how deeply the rivalry is woven into the city’s cultural fabric, influencing everything from bar conversations to weekend plans.
