Lily Diaz, a senior captain of Yorktown’s varsity field hockey team, has become a cornerstone of the program through three years of All‑Section and All‑League recognition, a record that began with six goals and 11 assists as a freshman and grew to 16 goals and 13 assists in her junior year, and she started every game as a freshman.
Community and Competition
Her involvement in the sport traces back to a youth clinic at age 12, where coach Courtney Hyndman introduced her to the game and later guided her development in lacrosse, a combination that helped Yorktown capture a Section 1 Class B championship in eighth grade, and she says the community and friendships formed through the team are her favorite part of being on the field.
Diaz credits her role models—her parents, older brother Troy, and Coach Hyndman—for instilling dedication and teamwork, values that have defined her approach on the field and in life.
Beyond the turf, Diaz plans to pursue architecture or design after high school, a path sparked by her art classes, while her admiration for NBA guard Jalen Brunson reflects a love for dynamic play and energy.
On game days she warms up to mellow classics from The Beatles and Bob Dylan, and she often grabs a sandwich at A&S Pork Store, her favorite Yorktown eatery, before dreaming of future trips to California, Seattle and Oregon along the West Coast.
With a blend of athletic achievement, community spirit and creative ambition, Lily Diaz exemplifies the modern student‑athlete, and her next chapter promises to blend the precision of sport with the imagination of design.
