A Historic Matchup Looms
Youngstown State University’s women’s basketball team will head west on December 13 to meet the University of Southern California in a first‑ever meeting that promises to reshape the early narrative of the 2026‑27 season.
Coach Melissa Jackson, who has guided the Penguins to a 25‑win campaign and a WNIT appearance, said the trip to California is about more than a game; it is an opportunity to give her players a memorable experience while testing them against a program that consistently competes for national championships.
Penguins Aim to Test the Nation’s Elite
USC arrives with a roster that returns stars JuJu Watkins and Jazzy Davidson, who topped the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks last season. The Trojans finished 18‑14 a year ago and earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and they are already being discussed as consensus title contenders, sitting at No. 1 in the USA Today preseason poll.
The matchup also carries a personal connection: Lindsay Gottlieb, now at the helm of USC, previously coached Jackson during her formative years at Youngstown State from 2000‑04, adding a subtle storyline to the on‑court clash.
A Reunion of Coaches and a New Recruit
Adding to the excitement, Saniyah Hall, the nation’s top recruit from Northeast Ohio, will join the Trojans for the 2026‑27 season, giving the team another boost as they prepare to open the campaign at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
For Youngstown State, the game marks only the second visit to California in the past 15 years, the last being a 2011 trip to Loyola Marymount. It also represents the third straight season the Penguins have faced a Big Ten opponent, having previously played Michigan State and Ohio State.
The contest will be announced in due time, and the full non‑conference schedule for YSU remains pending, but the anticipation already builds around what could become a defining moment for both programs.
