The annual golf outing at Knoll Run in Struthers, Ohio, drew a full slate of 36 foursomes, selling out the event that supports Youngstown State University’s women’s basketball program.
Sponsored by longtime benefactors Mike and Janet Murray, the day combined competitive play with a festive atmosphere, offering food, beverages, prizes and a chance for golfers to mingle with student‑athletes and coaches after the final hole.
Head coach Melissa Jackson and university President Bill Johnson took the opportunity to highlight the program’s recent successes on the court and in the classroom, emphasizing how community involvement fuels both recruitment and academic support.
A Community‑Driven Celebration
Winners were decided by the narrowest of margins: Adam Capretta’s men’s team captured the title with a 16‑under‑par 56, while Bob Hannon’s mixed group posted a 58 and Ann Marie Martin‑Gatchel’s women’s squad edged out with a 62, each victory coming by a single stroke.
The competition also featured skill contests, including longest drives and closest‑to‑the‑pin challenges for women, seniors and men, with awards presented across those categories.
Longtime supporter Frank Frattaroli shared a brief history of the event, noting its origins in 2003 when Tisha Hill first organized the fundraiser, and expressed gratitude for two decades of generosity.
In addition to golf accolades, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw added further fundraising momentum, underscoring the event’s role as a cornerstone of the program’s financial backing.
