A Milestone Promotion
Zach Flener has been promoted to Associate Head Coach of the Michigan Tech men’s basketball program, capping a four‑year ascent that saw him evolve from assistant to a pivotal architect of the team’s recent resurgence.
During his tenure as an assistant, the Huskies compiled a 74‑52 record, captured back‑to‑back GLIAC regular‑season championships in 2024‑25 and 2025‑26, and earned consecutive berths in the NCAA tournament, highlighted by an Elite Eight appearance in 2025‑26.
Head Coach Josh Buettner lauded Flener’s impact, describing him as a rising star whose ability to forge strong relationships with players has been central to the program’s turnaround.
The 2025‑26 campaign will be remembered for its historic milestones: the Huskies secured the first Midwest Region Championship in school history, posted a 29‑7 record that tied the program’s win total, and climbed as high as No. 5 in the national polls.
Veteran forward Marcus Tomashek led the charge, breaking the school’s three‑point record with 11 made threes in a single game, while Ty Fernholz later surpassed that mark with 12, underscoring the offensive firepower that defined the season.
With the foundation of back‑to‑back conference titles, Elite Eight exposure and a culture of excellence firmly established, Flener now steps into a role that promises continued growth and ambition for Michigan Tech basketball.
