West Virginia University announced Wednesday that Zai’Vion Meads, a 6‑foot‑3 defensive lineman from Louisville, Kentucky, has officially committed to the program for the class of 2027.
Meads capped a breakout junior season with 87 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and nine sacks, earning first‑team all‑District honors and drawing comparisons to some of the state’s top defensive prospects.
The recruit had been courted by a handful of Power Five programs, including Nebraska, Purdue, Baylor and Missouri, but a campus visit on May 29 proved decisive. ‘It felt like home the moment I stepped onto the quad,’ Meads said in a statement released to the press.
His commitment marks the twelfth pledge for WVU’s 2027 recruiting class and underscores a strategic emphasis on bolstering the defensive front.
A Defensive‑Centric Recruiting Strategy
The Mountaineers have prioritized the line of scrimmage this cycle, adding three defensive linemen — Meads, DaJour Webb and Trevoris Finley — to a group that already ranks among the nation’s most promising.
Coaches say the new additions will help reshape a defense that has struggled for consistency in recent seasons, providing depth and pass‑rush versatility.
Looking Ahead
The next steps for Meads involve enrolling at WVU in the fall of 2026, where he will join a freshman class that includes several other highly rated prospects. As the program continues to build momentum, the defensive line could become a cornerstone of the Mountaineers’ identity.
