The Navy women’s basketball program announced that senior forward Zanai Barnett‑Gay will serve as captain for the 2026‑27 campaign, a role that reflects both her on‑court dominance and her off‑court influence within the Midshipmen community.
Barnett‑Gay arrives at the helm after a three‑year tenure that includes a 14‑17 record as a freshman and a 19‑12 mark in 2024‑25, the latter culminating in a postseason berth. Over 92 career games she has amassed 1,659 points, 683 rebounds, 311 assists and 248 steals, placing her third in program history for both scoring and thefts.
Her accolades are equally impressive: three‑time All‑Patriot League First Team, 2025 Patriot League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and a key contributor to a record‑setting 22‑9 season in 2025‑26 that featured a 16‑2 conference slate and the program’s first league title since 2014.
Coach Tim Taylor highlighted her growth, stating that her servant‑leadership style and willingness to mentor younger teammates have reshaped the team’s culture. "Zanai’s commitment to the program goes beyond statistics; she elevates everyone around her," Taylor said.
The upcoming schedule opens with matchups against Mount St. Mary’s on November 2 and Air Force on November 14, setting the tone for a season that promises to blend tradition with a renewed drive for national relevance.
