A Legendary Send‑Off
Zdeno Chara, the Hall of Fame defenseman who spent two decades patrolling the Boston blue line, has organized a one‑off farewell game titled “Zee’s Final Shift” in Trenčín, Slovakia, on August 21, 2024. The event marks a rare gathering of former Bruins under one roof, offering fans a nostalgic glimpse of the franchise’s recent glory.
The roster will comprise 21 former Boston players, 13 of whom were part of the 2011 Stanley Cup‑winning team. Names such as Patrice Bergeron, Tomas Kaberle, Ray Bourque and the ever‑present Zdeno Chara will lead Team Boston, while a host of Czech and Slovak legends headline Team World.
Team World will feature Jaromir Jagr, Miroslav Satan, Petr Cech and other regional icons, forming a cross‑border all‑star lineup that highlights the broader hockey culture of Central Europe. Coaches Marco Sturm, Chris Kelly and Tim Thomas will guide their respective squads, adding a strategic layer to the exhibition.
Brad Marchand, who has been sidelined by recent surgery, will miss the game. He will be replaced by Jozef Stumpel, ensuring the lineup remains as full as possible. Meanwhile, Duncan Keith was announced for Team World but has not been formally added to the posted rosters, leaving his participation uncertain.
The match will be televised by Slovakian outlet JOJ ŠPORT, with additional behind‑the‑scenes content streamed on Instagram, giving viewers both live action and exclusive moments from the players’ preparation.
Beyond the on‑ice competition, the event serves as a tribute to Chara’s impact on the sport and a celebration of the Bruins’ rich history. Fans in Slovakia and around the world will have the chance to see familiar faces reunite, share stories and create new memories together.
