The Zeeland East football team endured a turbulent finish to last season, dropping five key starters to injury in the final week and exiting the playoffs in a 20‑6 loss to St. Joseph. Despite the setback, the squad’s defense managed to limit the opponent to just 20 points, a testament to its resilience.
Coach Joe Woodruff has already begun outlining the team’s primary objective: winning tight games, especially within the conference schedule. His focus on clutch performances reflects a belief that small margins can swing the outcome of any matchup.
A Revamped Offense
The offense will be anchored by returning quarterback Will Drnek, who amassed 1,765 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions while also contributing 249 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Complementing Drnek, receivers Isaiah Boonstra and Coby Miller bring proven playmaking ability; Boonstra’s 814 receiving yards and ten touchdowns last season earned him the coach’s description as ‘our most dangerous weapon.’
On the defensive side, linebacker Zeek Ramandhani, a Michigan Tech commit, emerged as a disruptive force with 31 tackles, four sacks and nine tackles for loss despite constant double‑team attention. His continued development could transform him into a dominant college‑level player.
Though the team lost three all‑conference linebackers—Derek Baxter, Peyton Davis and Ben DeLost—to graduation, the remaining core aims to fill the gaps and maintain the defensive intensity that held St. Joseph to 20 points in the playoff game.
With a blend of seasoned returnees and promising newcomers, Zeeland East hopes to translate its improved defensive foundation and potent offensive weapons into a season defined by close‑game victories and a strong finish in conference play.
