Zion Vilma Commits to Rutgers Football

Four-star recruit chooses Scarlet Knights over a host of powerhouse programs

Rutgers Football announced a major recruiting win on Tuesday as Zion Vilma, a standout athlete from Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School in Lake Worth, Florida, pledged to join the Scarlet Knights for the class of 2027.

A Multifaceted Talent

Vilma, who has earned recognition for his dual-threat abilities on both sides of the ball, will arrive in New Brunswick with a reputation as a dynamic wide receiver and a shutdown cornerback.

The commitment came after a whirlwind recruitment journey that began when Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano extended an offer in February, a move that echoed his earlier role in recruiting Vilma’s cousin, former NFL linebacker Jonathan Vilma, to the University of Miami.

During his junior season, Vilma posted 47 receptions for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns while also contributing 17 tackles and four interceptions on defense, numbers that helped him field scholarships from a host of powerhouse programs.

Ultimately, Vilma chose Rutgers over a slate of suitors that included Florida State, Georgia, Iowa State, Miami, Mississippi State, Syracuse, USF and Wake Forest, citing the personal connections and the program’s upward trajectory as decisive factors.

The addition of Vilma underscores Rutgers’ strategy of building a versatile defensive backfield and expanding its offensive weaponry, a plan that could pay dividends as the Scarlet Knights aim to climb the Big Ten rankings in the coming seasons.
