A forgotten pioneer steps back onto the field
Zoe Bonafonte takes on the role of Ana 'Nita' Carmona Ruiz, the trailblazing athlete who, over a century ago, slipped onto the football pitches of Málaga under the alias Veleta. The film, titled 'Veleta', is a Spain‑Argentina co‑production directed by Paco Torres, transporting viewers to the early 1900s when societal expectations barred women from the sport.
Set against the backdrop of the Rif War, the narrative follows Carmona’s clandestine masquerade as a male player, a secret she guarded for decades while the world around her shifted. The story weaves together the roar of early stadiums with the quiet defiance of a woman carving a place in a male‑dominated arena.
The cast reads like a roll call of contemporary Spanish talent: Dani Rovira, a 2015 Goya winner for 'Spanish Affair', portrays Carmona’s father, while Adelfa Calvo and Mariola Fuentes, both Goya laureates, appear alongside Moe Dunford of 'Vikings' fame and Amaya Muruzábal from 'Red Queen'. Their performances lend depth to a tale that is as much about personal identity as it is about sporting triumph.
Behind the camera, the project enjoys the backing of several cultural and sporting bodies. RTVA, the Andalusian public broadcaster, alongside M Content, Nephilim Producciones and Lahaye Media, have partnered with Spain’s ICAA and the Málaga Provincial Council to bring the film to life. Málaga CF, the region’s flagship club, has also pledged promotional support as the film prepares for a 2027 release.
More than a biopic, 'Veleta' seeks to resurrect a largely untold chapter of Spanish history, using the sport’s universal language to discuss gender equality and the reclamation of women’s narratives. By situating the story in Málaga, the production taps into local heritage while inviting international audiences to reflect on the progress — and the work still needed — in the fight for equal participation.
