Baton Rouge Kingfish Revive City’s Hockey Legacy with New FPHL Franchise

The Federal Prospects Hockey League has welcomed a new franchise that will call Baton Rouge home, reviving a piece of the city’s hockey heritage. The club adopts the Kingfish moniker, a nod to the city’s late 1990s and early 2000s team and an homage to former Governor Huey P. Long, whose nickname inspired the name. Ownership groups including Matt Pace and Andreas Johansson see the venture as both an honor and a chance to deliver a premium experience for fans, with Johansson also steering the nearby FPHL team Binghamton Black Bear. Veteran coach Jimmy Soper, a former Knoxville Ice Bears captain, will guide the squad, bringing a championship pedigree to the roster. Season tickets are now available, and the home opener is slated for October 16 against the Monroe Moccasins, giving Zydeco season‑ticket holders a two‑week window to secure their seats.
