A Draw That Echoed Beyond the Pitch
The World Cup encounter between Iran and Egypt concluded without a winner, leaving the stadium awash with rainbow flags as LGBTQIA+ supporters celebrated Pride despite warnings from both national football federations.
Egypt opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Mahmoud Saber slipped past the defense to net the first goal, while Iran answered back in the 14th minute through Ramin Rezaeian’s strike that equalized the contest.
A penalty awarded to Iran in the ninth minute was brilliantly denied by Egypt’s goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, preserving the deadlock and shifting momentum toward a tense finish.
The match seemed settled in a tie until Shoja Khalilzadeh’s 93rd‑minute header was ruled offside, a decision that sealed Iran’s unbeaten run but also ended their tournament journey without a loss.
With the draw, Egypt secured second place in the group and a slot in the round of 32, setting up a future clash with Australia, while Iran exited the competition having avoided defeat in every match.
After the final whistle, Iranian defender Ramin Rezaeian issued an apology to fans back home for not securing a win, and forward Mehdi Taremi acknowledged the existence of LGBTQIA+ supporters while noting that his faith does not condone same‑sex relationships.
