Monmouth University announced on Friday that Louis DiRienzo Jr., the school’s defensive coordinator and a rising star in college football, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 34. The news came just days after the program’s 2025 season concluded, and funeral services are set to be held later this week.
A Career Built on Momentum
DiRienzo joined Monmouth’s football staff in February 2025 after stints at Springfield College, Rutgers University and Wagner College. Within months he was promoted to defensive coordinator in January 2026, a testament to the confidence placed in his strategic vision and player development.
His influence was most evident in the 2025 defensive overhaul, where the team forced 17 turnovers and recorded 31 sacks, ranking fourth in the Coastal Athletic Association. Those numbers reflected a unit that had climbed steadily throughout the season under his guidance.
Voices from the Sideline
Monmouth athletics director Jennifer Sansevero praised DiRienzo for his passion and the lasting impact he had on the program, while head coach Jeff Gallo described him as “a great person, a dedicated father, and an exceptional coach.” Their tributes underscored the personal connections he forged with players and staff alike.
Before arriving in New Jersey, DiRienzo helped shape defensive identities at Springfield College, where he oversaw four consecutive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships. In 2023 he earned the Gridiron Club of New England Division II/III Co‑Assistant Coach of the Year honor, a distinction highlighted by Springfield athletics director Craig Poisson, who spoke of DiRienzo’s mentorship of both students and student‑athletes.
His coaching journey also included periods at Rutgers and Wagner College, and he honed his playing foundation at New Rochelle High School and Southern Connecticut State University, where he earned multiple all‑state and all‑league accolades and served as team captain.
Family, Education, and Final Services
DiRienzo is survived by his wife Allison, twin daughters Audrina and Giavanna, his parents Carol and Louis DiRienzo Sr., his brother Andrew, and his sister‑in‑law Courtney. Wake services will be held Thursday at Westchester Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass on Friday at Assumption of Our Lady Church in New York.
