Freshman star leads St. Francis Catholic to district and postseason triumphs amid standout multi‑sport performance

A Season of Dual Excellence

Carson Long, a freshman at St. Francis Catholic, has been crowned the Sun’s Small School Baseball Player of the Year after a breakout season that blended baseball brilliance with football prowess.

On the diamond, Long posted a slugging percentage of .938 and an on‑base percentage of .663, placing him among the top 17 hitters statewide in Florida. His .523 batting average, 28 stolen bases, 33 RBIs, five home runs and 33 runs scored all ranked within the top 21 in Class 2A, underscoring his all‑around offensive impact.

Pitching, he compiled a 2.94 ERA with seven wins and 71 strikeouts, a performance that helped anchor the Wolves' rotation.

Long also contributed to the football team, scoring 18 touchdowns and rushing for 863 yards, a dual‑sport feat that highlighted his athletic versatility.

Leading the Charge

Beyond individual statistics, Long captained a team of 24 players drawn from eight Gainesville‑area schools, guiding them to a district championship and an 11‑3 postseason victory over Lake Mary Prep.

The Wolves finished the 2026 season with a 24‑7 record, a testament to Long’s leadership and the collective effort of his teammates.

Coach Jiwan James of Union County was recognized as Coach of the Year after steering his squad to a state title, adding another layer of local pride to the season’s achievements.

The recognition extends beyond the field, as Long’s academic and community involvement reflects the values upheld by St. Francis Catholic and the broader Gainesville sports community.
