A Dream Realized on the Pitch
Cristo Fernández, the actor best known for his infectious optimism as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV+ hit 'Ted Lasso,' stepped onto a soccer field in the United States for the first time in a professional capacity.
The moment came during a USL Championship match between El Paso Locomotive FC and New Mexico United in El Paso, Texas, where Fernández entered the game in the 79th minute and was shown a yellow card just minutes later.
The Locomotive fell to a 2‑0 defeat, but the result was secondary to the significance of the occasion, marking the culmination of a two‑month trial that had seen the Mexican‑born midfielder train daily with the first‑team squad.
Fernández's journey to this point began far from the pitch. After early promise with Mexican side Guadalajara Estudiantes Tecos Club and a stint in Puerto Rico with Guayama FC, a series of injuries forced him to pivot toward acting. He honed his craft at the Guildford School of Acting in England, graduating from the University of Surrey before landing a breakout role that made him a household name.
His character’s mantra, 'Fútbol is life,' resonated with fans worldwide, and Fernández has since used social media to share his passion for the sport and his love for the El Paso community.
‘Playing for El Paso feels like coming home,’ he said after the match, expressing gratitude for the city that embraced him and the club that gave him a second chance.
The appearance also coincided with a promotional push for Apple TV+, where Fernández’s 'Ted Lasso' persona continues to attract viewers, underscoring the intertwining of sports and streaming culture.
