A Community‑Driven Basketball Tradition
The city of Fall River will once again host its beloved 3‑Point Hot Shot Challenge on August 21, a lively basketball competition that draws participants of all ages.
Organized by retired police officer Mike Perreira, the event pits shooters against six stations offering five, ten and twenty‑five point targets, beginning at the half‑court line. Those who sink the long ball move on to a free‑throw showdown where the top prize — a pair of Nike sneakers — awaits.
Beyond the competition, the gathering serves as a bridge between law enforcement and the community, with free pizza, hot dogs and drinks supplied by Police Chief J.T. Hoar and the Fall River Police Association. Representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Space Force will also be on hand to talk about career opportunities.
Registration opens at 4 p.m., with the youth division kicking off at 5 p.m. and the adult bracket following at 6 p.m. Contestants will be divided into three co‑ed categories: youths aged 10‑13, youths aged 14‑17, and adults 18 and older.
Prizes range from $250 Visa gift cards and trophies for first and second place in the youth groups to a $500 Visa gift card and a commemorative jersey for adult winners. The first 100 participants receive a T‑shirt and water bottle, and a raffle will award 50 additional pairs of sneakers.
The event’s financial backbone includes a $2,000 contribution from state Representative Carole Fiola, who helped fund a newly installed court, as well as support from sponsors such as Blue Shield Blue Cross of Massachusetts, We Care Health and Wellness, and other local businesses.
