Hendrick Motorsports confirmed on Tuesday that Connor Zilisch will join the organization in 2028, taking over the famed No. 48 Chevrolet that has been piloted by legends such as Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. The seat becomes available as Alex Bowman announces his retirement after the 2027 season, opening a new chapter for a team that has captured three Cup Series titles in the 2020s.
Zilisch arrives after a rapid ascent through the lower NASCAR divisions. He first made a name in karting, capturing national titles before moving to Europe at age eleven to compete in international series. Upon returning to the United States, he earned victories in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, and in 2024 he celebrated his debut win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at Watkins Glen. The following year he dominated the series with nine victories, secured the regular‑season championship with JR Motorsports, and began to attract high‑profile sponsors.
The young driver’s growing profile has already drawn backing from Red Bull and Weathertech, both of which have featured him in their racing programs. Ally Financial will continue its role as the primary sponsor of the No. 48 Chevrolet, ensuring continuity for a partnership that has become synonymous with the car’s identity.
A Legacy Re‑imagined
Rick Hendrick, owner of the storied organization, praised Zilisch’s talent and character, stating that the driver possesses the ability to uphold the No. 48’s storied tradition. Hendrick highlighted the team’s history of success with drivers such as Gordon, Johnson and Larson, and expressed confidence that Zilisch will add another chapter to that legacy.
The vacated No. 88 seat at Trackhouse Racing will now be available, giving the team flexibility to focus on its own driver lineup. Justin Marks and Shane van Gisbergen, among others, are expected to vie for the position, while the organization evaluates the best fit for its future ambitions.
Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as the 2028 season approaches, anticipating how Zilisch will blend his proven road‑course prowess with the demands of the Cup Series. With a strong support network, a championship pedigree, and a commitment to excellence, the young driver is poised to make a significant impact on the sport.
