A New Era of Analysis
Former UConn standouts Tina Charles and Renee Montgomery are set to bring their championship experience to the worldwide broadcast of the FIBA Women's World Cup, lending their insights to every one of the 36 games.
Charles, a three‑time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA All‑Star, transitioned from the court to the studio, where she breaks down tactics and shares the nuances of player experience. Montgomery, the 2009 fourth‑overall WNBA draft pick and former Atlanta Dream owner, complements her with a player‑turned‑executive perspective, having once filled in for Kenny Smith on a high‑profile men’s NCAA broadcast.
The coverage will be distributed across HBO Max and TNT, with every matchup available to streaming subscribers and television viewers starting September 4. This dual‑platform approach ensures that fans across the United States can tune in, whether they prefer the immediacy of live television or the flexibility of on‑demand viewing.
Both analysts will be watching the emergence of new American stars such as Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark, who are chasing a historic fifth consecutive World Cup title for UConn. Their commentary will highlight how the next generation blends the technical precision of earlier UConn greats with a fresh, dynamic style that is reshaping women’s basketball.
Charles also expands her storytelling beyond the court, having directed and produced the documentary “Charlie’s Records,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019. The film explores her father’s record store and musical legacy, underscoring the diverse creative pursuits that have become part of her public persona.
The partnership reflects a broader trend of former collegiate powerhouses returning to the sport in analytical roles, a movement that organizers say will deepen audience engagement and inspire future players. With the expertise of Charles, Montgomery, and their UConn mentors, the upcoming tournament promises a richer, more informed viewing experience for basketball enthusiasts worldwide.
