The tribute centers on Robert Neyland, whose tenure as head coach from 1926 to 1952 produced a 173‑31‑12 record and four national titles in 1938, 1940, 1950 and 1951, a legacy that still reverberates through Knoxville.
The helmet at the center of the design mirrors the leather caps worn in the 1930s, featuring cross patterns and stitching that recall the 1938 championship headgear, while a prominent star on the front celebrates Neyland’s service as a Brigadier General.
Additional touches include a three‑leaf trefoil that signals the global reach of the Adidas brand, perforations that reference the coach’s rallying cry to ‘charge the checkerboards atop Ayres Hall,’ and a commemorative patch that merges his iconic pose with historic blueprints from the 1948 stadium expansion and an interlocking UT emblem from his baseball career.
Debut and Availability
The uniform will debut on the field during the Volunteers’ October 3 matchup against Auburn at Neyland Stadium, the very venue that bears the coach’s name and where his legacy is most palpable.
Adidas will begin selling merchandise featuring the Smokey Grey design on September 1, giving fans an early chance to wear a piece of the tribute before the first game.
