The Points Landscape
Denny Hamlin entered the latest NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with a 25‑point cushion at the top of the Chase, a position that reflects his consistent performance over the opening stretch of the playoffs.
His seventh‑place finish not only solidified his seeding but also highlighted the strength of the Joe Gibbs Racing program, which has already collected four victories this season on high‑speed superspeedways such as Las Vegas, Nashville, Michigan and Pocono.
While Hamlin’s Toyota has excelled on tracks where aerodynamic downforce is king, the same package has shown a relative weakness on shorter circuits compared with the cars fielded by Team Penske.
Penske’s Short‑Track Edge
Team Penske, led by Ryan Blaney, has been the most prolific winner in the recent stretch, taking four of the last six races, three of which came on tracks of a mile or less. Blaney’s recent victories underline Penske’s edge on compact ovals, even though the team has managed only four top‑10 finishes in five outings on 1.5‑mile Chase venues, the best being a seventh at Charlotte.
Daytona’s New Regulations
The upcoming Daytona 400 introduces a new layer of uncertainty. NASCAR’s decision to eliminate practice sessions for the 2.5‑mile event means teams will have to adapt quickly to revised aerodynamic rules, a factor that could reshuffle the points picture just as the final two Chase spots are being contested.
Among the drivers eyeing those remaining positions are Austin Cindric, Shane van Gisbergen and Ryan Preece, each of whom could benefit from the rule changes. Meanwhile, Josh Berry of Wood Brothers Racing has posted a streak of top‑10 finishes that is the longest since 1994, adding another layer of competition to the mix.
Looking Ahead
The championship battle now hinges on how quickly Hamlin’s team can translate its high‑speed superiority into results on the shorter tracks that dominate the latter half of the Chase, while Penske looks to maintain its momentum on the circuits where it has historically been strongest.
