Spokane Valley Unveils Fresh Sports Amenities at Balfour Park
Spokane Valley’s Balfour Park has just emerged with a suite of new recreational amenities, including four dedicated pickleball courts, a full basketball court, two half‑court spaces, modern lighting fixtures and a versatile sound system that can be zoned for announcements or music.
The $6 million improvement project was financed through a combination of state and city grants and municipal funds, enabling the city to upgrade the park that serves roughly 13,000 residents within a mile, many of whom earn below the state median income and include about 750 households living below the poverty line.
City Councilman Ben Wick highlighted the sound system’s flexibility, noting its potential to host community events such as Outdoor Movies in the Park, a feature that could draw families and neighbors together after dark.
The park, acquired by the municipality in 2012 at 105 N. Balfour Road adjacent to City Hall, began as a 2.5‑acre site funded originally by the Spokane Valley Kiwanis Club and the Opportunity Recreation Council, and has since expanded to meet growing recreational demand that once required temporary pickleball courts.
Looking ahead, the city has secured $4 million for a 2027 playground and splash pad, and grading work for an outdoor amphitheater in the park’s northwest corner is already complete, promising a venue for local performances and gatherings.
Director John Bottelli emphasized that the upgrades address the community’s significant recreational needs, ensuring that Balfour Park remains a vital hub for health, social interaction and cultural activity for years to come.
