A Scholar-Athlete's Triumph
The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced this week that Andy Thies, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award, an honor that celebrates outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
Thies, who majors in accounting, carries a 3.642 grade point average that reflects his dedication to scholarship. His athletic résumé is equally impressive, featuring third-team D3baseball.com All-American honors in 2025 and fourth-team recognition in 2024, along with All-Region selections from both D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2024 and 2025.
The Legacy of Max Sparger
The award bears the name of former WIAC commissioner Max Sparger, who steered the conference from NAIA competition to full NCAA membership between 1971 and 1993. Sparger’s contributions were recognized with his induction into the WIAC Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing his lasting impact on collegiate athletics in the region.
Eligibility for the scholar-athlete award requires a minimum 3.50 GPA, participation in athletics for at least two seasons, and progression toward graduation. The selection process weighs academic performance, athletic accomplishments and community involvement, ensuring that honorees exemplify a well-rounded collegiate experience.
Looking Ahead
As the new season approaches, Thies aims to build on his recent successes, aspiring to contribute both on the field and in the community. His journey serves as a model for future scholar-athletes who seek to excel in rigorous academic programs while competing at the highest collegiate level.
