Portland Hearts of Pine to Host World Cup‑Themed Fan Events Across the City

Free outdoor watch parties, merchandise tents and community activities scheduled for June and July

A Summer of Soccer Celebration in Portland

The Portland Hearts of Pine, Maine’s professional men’s soccer club, is gearing up to turn the city into a hub of World Cup excitement over the next few weeks, offering fans a trio of themed gatherings that blend live broadcasting, community spirit and local culture.

The centerpiece will be a free, outdoor doubleheader on June 19 in Monument Square, where supporters can watch the U.S. men’s national team face Australia at 3 p.m. and then remain for the Hearts of Pine’s road contest against Westchester SC at 7 p.m.

Organizers have promised a beer garden, a merchandise tent stocked with club apparel and a live performance by The Valentine Band, whose songs have become an integral part of the match‑day atmosphere for the team.

A second event is scheduled for June 12 at the historic State Theatre, featuring a watch party for the U.S. versus Paraguay match, while a larger Footy Fest is planned for July 19, offering multi‑generational pickup games, food trucks, music and appearances by Hearts of Pine players.

Cary Tyson, executive director of Portland Downtown, said the upcoming festivities will be bigger and more diverse than the 2022 World Cup watch party that drew roughly 1,500 fans, reflecting the growing appetite for soccer in the region.

Lisa Frates, the club’s senior manager for marketing and communications, noted that the team is awaiting FIFA’s Public Viewing License, a process that Governor Maura Healey has indicated should be cleared within the week.

State officials have confirmed that 13 of the 17 municipalities that received grant funding for World Cup fan festivals have yet to secure permits, but the administration remains confident that approvals will be granted in time for the events.

The Hearts of Pine have sold out all 23 home matches at Fitzpatrick Stadium this season, a testament to the club’s rising popularity, a fact highlighted by founder Gabe Hoffman‑Johnson, who praised Maine’s enthusiastic support for the sport.

Fans are being urged to celebrate the World Cup final at any local venue that shares their passion for soccer, ensuring that the city’s love of the game extends beyond the scheduled watch parties.
