NASCAR has removed Kyle Busch from the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series points standings following his death, a decision made in consultation with his team, Richard Childress Racing, to spare fans the added sting of seeing his name still listed in the competition.
A compassionate adjustment
At the time of his passing, Busch was positioned 23rd in the points championship and 27th after the Charlotte race; the No. 8 car, now fielded as the No. 33 entry, currently sits 24th in the owners’ points tally.
The series has a history of preserving a driver’s statistical record after their death, as seen with legends such as Dale Earnhardt and Kenny Irwin Jr., who retained their points in the seasons following their fatalities.
By excising Busch’s name from the points ledger, NASCAR hopes to lessen the constant visual reminder of his presence in the competitive narrative, even as tributes to the driver will continue to appear at each venue throughout the year.
The move was first reported by journalist Bob Pockrass, who noted that the decision reflects a desire to balance empathy with the sport’s competitive integrity.
