Wagner College announced Tuesday that Malcolm Pope will join the men's basketball program as an assistant coach for the 2026‑27 season, bringing a proven track record of player development and championship success.
Pope most recently served as the head boys basketball coach at Pioneer Academy in Wayne, New Jersey, where he led the program to multiple conference titles and helped dozens of student‑athletes secure college scholarships.
Before his tenure at Pioneer Academy, Pope spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Our Savior Lutheran, honing his ability to blend defensive schemes with offensive creativity.
His coaching journey also includes a six‑year stint as the head coach of the New York Lightning 16U EYBL AAU team, a program that has captured several national championships under his guidance.
A Championship‑Laden Coaching Background
Under Pope’s leadership, the New York Lightning 16U squad has become known for its competitive edge and disciplined play, consistently ranking among the top AAU programs in the region.
The team’s championship pedigree reflects Pope’s talent for identifying and nurturing talent, a skill that aligns with Wagner’s ambition to elevate its own recruiting class.
Roots in Harlem
A native of Harlem, New York, Pope’s basketball foundation was laid on the city’s storied courts, where he developed a deep appreciation for the game’s culture and community.
Academic Foundations
Pope graduated from the University of Texas Permian Basin in 2015 with a degree in communications, a background that supports his ability to connect with players, media and recruits alike.
What This Means for Wagner
Wagner’s athletic director highlighted Pope’s blend of grassroots experience and high‑level competition as a strategic asset as the program seeks to strengthen its roster and on‑court philosophy.
The addition of Pope is expected to enhance the team’s recruiting reach, especially within the Northeast corridor, while also providing mentorship to players aiming for professional opportunities.
Dwan McMillan, a longtime colleague of Pope, praised the hire, noting that Pope’s “relentless work ethic and player‑first mindset” will complement the existing coaching staff.
