A Milestone on the Field
Stan Tait, an 88‑year‑old soccer referee, recently celebrated 70 years of officiating, a career that began in 1956 while he was serving in the British Army. Over the course of his tenure he has overseen more than 5,000 matches, including an international fixture between the United States and Bermuda in 1975.
His expertise earned him certification from the Scottish Football Association in 1958 and the prestigious FIFA designation in 1967. In 1979 he was named Honorary National Referee, and in 2005 he joined the board of AYSO Region 79, where he now serves as referee administrator.
Mentorship and Community Impact
Beyond his on‑field duties, Tait has trained more than 2,000 referees, a contribution that has helped Monroe maintain multiple officials for each game despite a broader shortage of volunteers in many towns. His work with AYSO Region 79 and collaborations with organizations such as the Canadian Soccer Association and FIFA have amplified his influence across North America.
To honor his seven‑decade milestone, Tait received a plaque featuring a silver whistle, a token of appreciation from the local soccer community. The ceremony was attended by his son, Shawn Tait, and his grandson, Brayden Tait, underscoring the family’s deep involvement in the sport.
Legacy of Service
Tait’s dedication extends to imparting his extensive knowledge to younger generations, ensuring that the next wave of referees carries forward the standards of fairness and professionalism he has upheld for half a century. His story illustrates how a single individual can shape an entire community’s sporting landscape through sustained commitment and mentorship.
