Appalachian State University announced this week that Jonathan Mitchell will join its men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of championship pedigree and extensive coaching experience to the program.
A Champion’s Playing Resume
Mitchell’s playing career began with a national title on the Florida Gators in 2007, followed by a standout collegiate stint at Rutgers where he earned All‑Big East honors and was named New York State Gatorade Player of the Year in 2006. He capped his collegiate career as the all‑time leading scorer at Mount Vernon High School before embarking on a seven‑year professional journey that took him to Spain, Israel, France, Greece, Hungary and Iceland.
His early coaching steps included an assistantship under Tom Crean at the University of Georgia, where he worked directly with NBA center Nic Claxton and helped shape the development of several future professionals.
Success at Mercer and Beyond
During his most recent tenure at Mercer, Mitchell helped the Bears post their best record in twelve years and mentored two all‑conference selections, Baraka Okojie and Armanti Mighty. His contributions caught the attention of the Birmingham Squadron, the G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans, where he served as an assistant coach and continued to refine his tactical acumen.
A Rising Voice in Coaching
Mitchell’s reputation as a rising star in the coaching ranks was further cemented when he was selected to attend the TopConnect Basketball Symposium in both 2025 and 2026, and when he participated in the inaugural NABC Flight School in 2026.
Beyond the hardwood, Mitchell holds a degree in communications from Rutgers (2011) and remains deeply connected to his New York roots, a background that informs his approach to player development and leadership.
