A Danish Veteran Takes the Wheel in NASCAR
Kevin Magnussen, the 30‑year‑old former Formula 1 driver from Denmark, is set to make his NASCAR Cup Series debut on June 21, 2026, behind the wheel of the No. 91 Qualcomm Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing’s PROJECT91 program.
The race will take place on a 3.4‑mile street circuit at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, marking the first time the Cup Series has contested a venue of this kind.
PROJECT91, conceived by team owner Justin Marks in 2022, aims to provide internationally recognized drivers with an opportunity to compete in NASCAR, having previously showcased talents such as Kimi Räikkönen, Shane van Gisbergen and Hélio Castroneves.
Magnussen’s résumé includes a podium finish on his Formula 1 debut, a pole position with the Haas F1 Team at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, and recent campaigns in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the NTT IndyCar Series.
He will be guided by veteran crew chief Phil Surgen, who brings six Cup Series victories, three playoff appearances and a runner‑up finish in the 2022 championship standings to the partnership.
The lineup for the event will also feature full‑time Trackhouse drivers Shane van Gisbergen, Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch, promising a competitive field for the 75‑lap showcase.
Coverage of the inaugural event will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime, bringing the new street‑course format to a broad audience.
