Louisville’s men’s basketball program will not meet Cincinnati at Freedom Hall during the 2026‑27 season, a decision that reshapes the long‑standing rivalry between the two schools.
The matchup, which has been played 101 times over the decades, has been pushed back to the 2027‑28 campaign, giving both teams additional time to fine‑tune their rosters.
In the meantime, the Cardinals’ nonconference slate for 2026‑27 features contests against Baylor, Kentucky and Memphis, each of which promises a different style of competition.
Beyond those games, Louisville will travel to Las Vegas to take part in the Players Era tournament, a showcase that brings together some of the nation’s top collegiate talent.
The schedule also includes a home game against Texas as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge, a high‑profile event that pits ACC and SEC programs against one another.
Looking Ahead
Coach Pat Kelsey, who took over the program last season, emphasized that the adjustments are part of a broader strategy to build depth and resilience.
Veteran broadcaster Scott Springer noted that the move reflects a careful calendar management approach, balancing travel, rest and competitive balance.
Rick Pitino, a former head coach at Louisville, commented on the historic nature of the rivalry, saying the pause will only heighten anticipation when the game finally returns.
Fans have expressed a mix of disappointment and patience, understanding that the extra year could bring new talent and stronger matchups.
The university’s athletic department confirmed that ticket packages for the rescheduled Cincinnati game will be released later this summer.
