Marks Takes the Wheel at Naval Base Coronado
The NASCAR Truck Series will stage its first ever race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego on June 19, kicking off a weekend that also features a Cup Series event on Sunday. The unique venue, located on a historic military installation, is set to begin at 7 p.m., promising a blend of tradition and novelty for fans and competitors alike.
Among the participants is Justin Marks, a former driver turned team owner who will step into the cockpit for the first time in a Truck Series race. Marks, who founded Trackhouse Racing, brings a modest but notable résumé that includes a single victory in 2016 at Mid‑Ohio, as well as 39 starts across the series over seven seasons, during which he earned four top‑10 finishes.
Marks expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, citing the backing of Spire Motorsports and the apparel partner Jockey as key factors that made the debut feel like a natural next step. “I’m excited to bring my experience and the perspective of a team owner to this historic event,” he said, adding that the collaboration with Jockey adds a personal touch to the weekend.
The driver lineup also features seven‑time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who will contest both the Truck race on Friday and the Cup race on Sunday, alongside veterans Brendan Gaughan, Jamie McMurray, Kaz Grala and Parker Kligerman. Their presence adds depth to a field that already includes a mix of seasoned competitors and rising talent.
Spire Motorsports president Bill Anthony highlighted the significance of Marks’ participation, noting that the owner‑driver’s involvement underscores the series’ growing appeal and the company’s commitment to fostering new talent. “Having Justin behind the wheel is a testament to our vision of blending competition with innovative partnerships,” Anthony remarked.
The event is further bolstered by a partnership with Chevrolet, which will supply the trucks, and by the apparel brand Jockey, whose logo will adorn the driver’s suit. Together, these collaborations illustrate how the Truck Series is leveraging high‑profile sponsors to enhance the spectacle while maintaining a focus on competitive racing.
